Very few Governments collect and publish statistics on the number of children in detention.<\/p>\n

Even when Governments do gather statistics, there are often challenges in accurately comparing data.<\/p>\n

Despite these challenges, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has released landmark data<\/strong> on child detention in 12 countries as part of the\u00a0Global Strategy Beyond Detention.<\/u><\/b><\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”7045″ img_size=”full” onclick=”custom_link” link=”http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/protection\/detention\/57b579e47\/unhcr-global-strategy-beyond-detention-progress-report.html”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Read the\u00a0baseline report from 2013<\/u><\/a> and the\u00a0progress report from 2016<\/u>.<\/a><\/p>\n

The data reveals that important progress towards ending detention of children is taking place in\u00a0the 12 countries involved in the Global Strategy.<\/p>\n

The progress report shows a 14 per cent decrease in the total number of children detained across the 12 countries, when comparing data at the\u00a0end 2015 to 2014.<\/p>\n

By the end of 2015, two countries had stopped detaining children seeking\u00a0asylum – both as result of court cases brought by civil society.<\/p>\n
