event, but these \u201cbooks\u201d are not your usual library books&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>People with personal experiences tell their story about ending child immigration detention.<\/p>\n<p>They will be available for those\u00a0at the Council of Europe to &#8220;borrow&#8221; for a conversation\u00a0about the impacts of immigration detention on children, and the options available to\u00a0avoid the use of immigration detention.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The experts speaking at this event\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anne Brasseur<\/strong>, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe<\/li>\n<li><strong>Doris Fiala, <\/strong>the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>General Rapporteur on Ending Immigration Detention of Children<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antje\u00a0Rothemund,<\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>Head of Youth Department of the Council of Europe<\/li>\n<li><strong>Niclas Axelsson,<\/strong>\u00a0Swedish Migration Board<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jens Kraatz, <\/strong>Condrobs Housing Project for Young Refugees and Students<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leeanne Torpey<\/strong>, Global Campaign Coordinator<\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"il\">P\u0131nar<\/span> <span class=\"il\">Aksu,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"il\">Advocate detained as a child in the UK<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ms.Meltem Avcil,\u00a0<\/strong>Advocate detained as a child in the UK<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sameer Hannan,\u00a0<\/strong>Advocate detained in the Netherlands with his son<\/li>\n<li><strong>Martin Vegter,\u00a0<\/strong>Defence for Children International, Netherlands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe<\/b> (<b>PACE<\/b>) is made up of 318 parliamentarians from the national parliaments of the Council of Europe&#8217;s 47 member states, and is one of two organs\u00a0dedicated to upholding human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and which oversees the <a title=\"European Court of Human Rights\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Court_of_Human_Rights\">European Court of Human Rights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a follow-up to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/idcoalition.org\/european-parliamentary-assembly-vote-ending-child-immigration-detention-europe\/\">PACE&#8217;s report and resolution<\/a>\u00a0calling for alternatives to immigration detention for children last year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Doris Fiala has recently been appointed as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.assembly.coe.int\/nw\/xml\/News\/News-View-EN.asp?newsid=5498&amp;lang=2&amp;cat=134\">the General Rapporteur on Ending Immigration Detention of Children<\/a> by the Council of Europe Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/endchilddetention.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Letter-Mr-Mariani-to-Ms-Torpey_2-Feb-2015-3.pdf\">Click here for a letter from Mr Mariani<\/a>, Chairperson of the Committee expressing their support for the Campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In supporting the campaign, the Committee will urge\u00a0governments to <strong>undertake changes to law, policy and practice<\/strong> to ensure that children are never detained on the basis of their or their parents\u2019 immigration status.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The event will take place at the Assembly Chamber\u2019s lobby from midday\u00a0<strong><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_673778771\"><span class=\"aQJ\">20 April<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and from 9am to 5pm <strong>2<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_673778772\"><span class=\"aQJ\">1 April<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a historic commitment, the\u00a0Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe\u00a0is launching the\u00a0Campaign to End Immigration Detention of Children.
