Major step forward for the Netherlands

The Netherlands taken a major step forward to place less innocent asylum seeking children in detention.

Families with children who are seeking asylum will no longer be detained in facilities at the border, except for very exceptional situations.

This marks a significant and welcome change, when all families with children

were placed in boarder facility detention for a period of 14 days before being transfered to facilites designed for families.

From September 1, families will be screened in a matter of hours at the airport and taken to an open application centre.

Here’s the press release from Defence for Children Netherlands, and the Netherlands Coalition to End Immigration Detention of Children.

Shortly the Global Campaign will be publishing an english translation of the Defence For Children Netherlands report on findings of the impacts of short term detention on children in immigration detention. It’s available in Dutch here.
