Call for global study into children deprived of liberty

A new initiative has been launched the Defence for Children International, calling for a Global Study on Deprivation of Liberty of Children to be adopted by the United Nations.

This is an effort to get systematic, disaggregated, global data on children in detention – including those in administrative and immigration detention.

We here at the Global Campaign to End Immigration Detention are really excited about this initiative because it’s a constant challenge to get verified sources of information on the numbers of children being detained worldwide.

If adopted by the UN, an Independent Expert would be appointed to undertake a global study, following the model of the Secretary General’s study on Violence Against Children in 2003 (“Pinheiro Study“) which subsequently led to the establishment of a UN Special Representative to the Secretary General on Violence Against Children.
