Planet Wheeler Foundation

Although Planet Wheeler is a relatively new Foundation, its founders Maureen and Tony Wheeler have a long philanthropic history. In their travels as founders and authors of Lonely Planet Publications, Maureen and Tony Wheeler saw firsthand the need to support those more in need than themselves; as Lonely Planet book sales grew over the years, so did their capacity for giving.

Lonely Planet first began a policy of donating a fixed percentage of profits to NGOs in 1987.

The sale of a majority stake in Lonely Planet Publications to BBC Worldwide in 2007 forced a change in structure and Planet Wheeler Foundation was born.

Planet Wheeler Foundation is a separate entity to Lonely Planet Publications. However, until recently we worked out of the Lonely Planet offices in Melbourne, Australia and we still source recommendations from Lonely Planet authors and staff around the world.

Planet Wheeler Foundation has no religious or political affiliations.
